Traditional Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients

  • 500g plain flour (or malted flour)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 400ml buttermilk

Optional:
- 1 tsp honey (adds slight sweetness)
- Handful of sultanas or seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the buttermilk and mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface.
  5. Knead very lightly (about 20–30 seconds) just until it comes together.
  6. Shape into a round loaf.
  7. Place onto a baking tray lined with parchment.
  8. Cut a deep cross on the top of the loaf (traditional and helps it bake evenly).
  9. Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.

Notes

  • Do not over-knead; soda bread should be quick and rustic.
  • If the dough feels too wet, add a little extra flour.
  • Best eaten warm with butter.
  • Keeps for 2 days and can be toasted.
